The declaration regarding a deal projected to lead to the release captives held within Gaza for more than 24 months has caused joy and relief across the nation.
An organization that has advocated for the release of Israeli captives held in Gaza voiced “profound gratitude” for what it called an “historic breakthrough”.
The deal—which still must be approved by Israel’s war cabinet—will see the return of 20 hostages alive and the bodies of 28 dead hostages in exchange for 250 Palestinian detainees imprisoned for life in Israeli prisons plus 1,700 individuals from the Gaza region.
To date, 148 hostages have been returned—largely through earlier truce agreements—51 sets of remains have been recovered and eight hostages were freed by rescue.
Jubilant scenes took place in Hostages’ Square in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people gathered before the deal being signed.
A crowd began clapping and moving to music beneath US and Israeli flags—one woman displaying a placard saying: “We adore Trump.”
“It’s a magical day,” she expressed.
Another, 50-year-old Yael, wept as she watched the crowd dancing.
“I am thrilled—it’s such a relief,” she said. “We must witness them come back home to their families.”
The mother and sister of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker set off fireworks to mark the announcement that he would be returned home.
“They are returning!... Matan is coming home!” Einav Zangauker said while holding her child.
Viki Cohen, the mother of Israeli hostage Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: “My son, you are returning home.”
The delight could be felt throughout the avenues in Tel Aviv following the news.
Former British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari celebrated with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of gratitude, then toasting “To life”, which means “for life”. She has been campaigning for the freedom of her companions, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.
Their sibling Liran Berman wrote: “My Gali and Ziv, I love you so much. You’re coming home.”
Gil Dickman’s cousin Carmel Gat was captured in October 2023, with her remains recovered from an underground passage in Gaza almost a year later. He has participated with other hostage families in pushing for a deal that brings the return of everyone still being held within Gaza.
“I hardly believe this is real. We have waited for so long and here it is,” he said.
He stated he felt “shattered” that Carmel would not be among those returning to their homes but was “glowing with joy” for the families of the captives who are finally returning.
Eitan Horn was seized from Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel along with his brother.
Dalia Cusnir, whose brother-in-law Eitan Horn remains captive in Gaza, said she felt as if she were in “in a dream”.
“We’re more than grateful to the President and all he has accomplished for us. We feel like it might be the beginning of the end of this ordeal, and hugging Eitan seems nearer than ever,” she said.
But she cautioned that it was still too soon to rejoice.
“Before the final captive returns, we won’t open the bubbly. We’re going to keep fighting... until it’s over,” she said.
“Numerous events can happen until the last moment which is why we’re being so, so careful. We just want to thank everyone who participated in the work and ensure this deal is finalized... We shall rejoice only once the last captive is safely home.”
Eitan was taken from kibbutz Nir Oz in Israel’s south along with his brother Iair, who was released from captivity in a ceasefire deal earlier in the year.
