Pizza Market Saturation? Domino's CEO Departs After Shift Towards Fried Chicken.

A boss of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who suggested the UK might have reached maximum pizza demand while expanding the chain into chicken products has been removed after conflicts with its board.

Leadership Shake-Up

Andrew Rennie is leaving after only 24 months in leadership, and will be replaced on an interim basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Frampton, while the pizza giant seeks a long-term chief.

The outgoing executive, who was with the company for over 20 years, had attempted to pivot the UK's leading pizza food delivery firm towards fried chicken, stating recently there was not “significant expansion” left in the UK's pizza market. He noted chicken was the fastest-growing food category in the international market.

Board Friction

Reports indicate that there was disagreement between Rennie and the directors over his strategy and management style, although the company's release said he was departing “as a joint decision”.

New Brand Launch

In September, the chain unveiled its chicken-focused product line – which Rennie referred to as a “bold new chapter” for the group – and is trialling it in over 200 locations in the North West region and Northern Ireland.

While the company is still going to roll it out across its almost 1,400 stores in 2026 as intended, it regards chicken products as complementary to its core pizza business.

Leadership Statement

The Domino's chair, the Domino's chair, said: “We are confident that there are a range of possibilities to boost expansion and value creation in Domino's core business. We are concentrating on finding the right chief executive to direct the disciplined execution of that expansion plan.”

Market Challenges

In the latest update, the pizza delivery giant, which has a substantial customer base in the UK and Ireland, said transactions fell by 1.5% in the third quarter. In the summer, it cautioned that the quick-service industry had “grown more challenging” as it blamed economic uncertainty in the run-up to the budget and rising wage costs for weaker-than-expected sales and a 15% drop in interim earnings.

Other pizza operators are also experiencing difficulties. Pizza Hut revealed the shutting of 68 restaurants a recently, after the company behind its British operations entered insolvency.

Health Efforts

Responding to customer preferences towards better nutrition, the company has rolled out light options, such as its thin-crust range of pizzas below 400 kcal as well as vegan and allergy-friendly options. A family-sized pepperoni has over 2,300 kcal. A family cheese pizza has over 2,100, while a personal has 909 calories.

Interim Management

The interim chief has been with the company since the recent past, and had a background at the betting firm William Hill. It is understood that she does not want to occupy the chief executive role long-term.

Frampton stated: “The company has a several active development and efficiency programs that we will be concentrating on carrying out at speed.”

She said these included additional efforts on the organization's logistics network and new item creation, and its rewards program.

Domino's is also in need of a full-time chief financial officer until the spring, when Andrea joins from the Irish cider and beer maker a well-known firm. Until then, Snow is acting financial officer.
