Aaron Rai displayed exceptional composure to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a tense play-off following a topsy-turvy last day of play.
Rai sank a crucial birdie from just over eight feet to clinch the victory, echoing his sole prior tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff win against the same opponent.
Rai started the last day with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 final round that included seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood edged one shot clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last green.
This set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner prevailed to take the title and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even better person. To play with him the final two rounds was really special,” stated Rai, the present world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on your game and maintaining focus, it’s hard to put into words at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be stood here.”
Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to make up, coming up a stroke behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under final round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and an eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his own, but his chances of topping the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell hit an superb last round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
