Tuchel Wants Bellingham's Passion So Long As The Three Lions' Star Leaves Egotism at the Door.

A single omission did the trick. A second one and it could have seemed spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, who is far too wily not to understand that claiming the World Cup trophy is probably going to require help from Jude Bellingham, although it is also up to the player to blend into the game plans and player rankings necessary with England now that he is back in Tuchel's supportive environment.

The manager desires the player's competitive fire, his intensity, but it is about using it appropriately. Personal talent matters but the squad have learned the hard way that there is a cost when celebrity prevails. Still, a message has been sent.

The midfielder was given food for thought after not being selected of the previous squad. He observed England book their place at next summer’s World Cup in his absence. He saw Morgan Rogers shine as a high-pressing No 10. He heard the coach talk about loving the squad's spirit and ethics. Inevitably, Bellingham has reacted in top form, netting important strikes for Real Madrid against Barcelona and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; another omission would have left his World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.

The expectation is that Tuchel will have a midfielder concentrating on pressuring the opposition instead of teammates. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is little benefit to picking a fight with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period not playing has shown him that playing for one's country is a valuable, precarious thing. The coach, for his part, can now provide cover around the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is not afraid to take tough decisions.

“No issue exists with him, there is no problem about his personality,” the German said. “Jude just has the edge. It takes a sharp mentality to succeed at the top that he reached. We all need to support him and establish an environment which he can channel his drive against rivals and in pursuit of success we are building as a team.”

The star took up much of the focus at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s meaningless matches against Serbia and Albania. Who else? Indeed, how about another talent? This is a further gifted playmaker requiring support and direction. Foden has not played for the national team since spring and has found it hard to reach his best this year but Tuchel could not ignore the player after his performance in his club's victory against Borussia Dortmund this week.

The issue, however, is how to use the attacking talents at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be a good argument to include another youngster once he recovers from a persistent groin problem. Is selecting multiple creators to the tournament be too many? The previous manager failed to discover the correct balance at Euro 2024. He compromised by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, restricting the captain's style as a result.

It is hard to see Tuchel repeating that if it disrupts the offensive structure. Space exists for one No 10, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clear roles is beneficial. He is selected as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first time, is a central midfielder and the returning Wharton will vie with another player as a No 6. There will also be no position on the wing for the City star, who must play through the middle. Tuchel wants him close to Kane. “It is illogical to ask Foden: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play left wing? Or the right wing?” he stated. “Phil will play in the No 9-10ish position, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this vision about him for years. In my view it suits him best.”

Tuchel conceded there are occasions when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “You feel almost like, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight for the game, then obviously something is not right, be it the position, the environment, it's unclear.

“I think he is additionally accustomed to playing for Man City in a particular setup, with a clear task. I think he benefits greatly from clarity. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? When should I to accelerate the match? What are my to defensive duties?”

Tuchel discussed Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and the other drilling in strikes from 18 yards. He said he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. A new face is rewarded for his good displays for City at left-back. Intrigue is high.

Leaving out of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in the selection. Interestingly, he suggested deploying the playmaker as a deep-lying striker against Serbia or the other. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are other options if Kane be absent. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for trying new things.

Meanwhile, it is also a chance to develop the understanding with his teammate flowing. It is remarkable that you have to go back to the latter setting up Kane to net in an international match versus Scotland in over a year ago to find the one and only time in 35 games for the national team when the pair combined for a goal. Tuchel will be aware that the two stars only passed to each other once during the team's ties with one opponent and another at the Euros. The connection is lacking.

“This is where eventually it becomes the duty of the players,” he said. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. Remains a feeling of Bellingham under scrutiny. He cannot even be assured to start against the upcoming opponents. Tuchel wants him committed but he will be watching him closely. Set aside self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong England team into an superior one.
